Italy's layered approach to climate
You need comfortable shoes, and lots of layers. A small portable umbrella and a raincoat that can be easily folded into your luggage would be nice, as it does rain in Italy in the spring. Every winter in Italy is different and every April can vary a lot on the way to spring.
In I was in Rome at the beggining of April. I never wore my sweater even. We truned the heat off in the apt. I wore short sleeve tees. It was sunny for 10 days at deg F during the day. I had to buy sunscreen for my nose. Just layer it up. I wouldn't bother with anything heavy either.
A light jacket may be required but that's it. I adore April in Rome. I think some of you are confusing American jumpers long dresses with no sleeves worn over a pullover with British jumpers pullover sweaters. Jumpers would be fine in April. A cardigan may be even better, because you can unbutton it when it gets warm. I have been in Rome in April a number of times. Once is was quite rainy, and consequently chilly. Other times it can be warm. Often it's chilly in the morning and evening, but hot at midday.
You need to have a variety of clothing for all conditions, and perhaps a small daypack to put the sweaters in when you no longer need them. There's a lot of posts asking about March weather- all those answers go for April, for the most part, too!
April should be a lot less cold than March, but here "should" is an important word. I wouldn't worry about gloves or hats. Compared to Oxford , it's likely to be noticably warmer overall. Gorgeous photos Peter.
I'm definitely adding Ischia to my list for the next trip. I've never been south of Rome and I understand I'm really missing something wonderful. I was thinking of taking my ugz since I find them comfortable and sneakers but not sure now if it rains during March. Please help with any advice. Skip to main content.
